BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS OF POVERTY IN ALBANY

National Report Highlights Local Woman’s Success

Albany, NY - August 4, 2014 – The promise of Community Action is to change people’s lives. That is what the Albany Community Action Partnership (ACAP) has done for LaDasia Jeffers, who grew up in poverty but knew she wanted more for herself and her family. “We are proud of the rewarding work we do at ACAP to help our customers on their journey to economic stability,” said Neenah Bland, Acting Executive Director for ACAP. “We provide the opportunity, guidance and supportive services they need.”

When LaDasia first came to ACAP for help, she was a young single mother with two boys under the age of two. Her goal was to find a way to stop relying on TANF and to become financially independent. LaDasia enrolled in a job-training program at ACAP aimed at helping low-income individuals become a certified nurse assistant (CNA). “It wasn’t easy,” said LaDasia. “I was facing some serious problems. I nearly lost my home and I had transportation problems getting my children to daycare and getting myself to training each day. But, ACAP helped me break down these barriers and it paid off.”

LaDasia’s success is a worthy example of how opening doors and providing accessible job-driven training along with supportive services can allow low-income individuals who are willing to work an opportunity for a better life.

LaDasia’s story recently received national attention. She was featured in a report released by the White House containing an agenda aimed at investing and expanding job-driven training opportunities in America. “ACAP is proud to be in the forefront of this effort and to receive this national attention” continued Bland. “ACAP offers real solutions for people in need of employment and the right skills and confidence needed to begin a successful career.”
