First steps underway toward creating greenspace in the Lexington Avenue Neighborhood

Albany, NY - October 11, 2013 – Volunteers from the private, public and nonprofit groups launched of the Lexington Avenue neighborhood greenspace initiative on Friday. Plans are underway to transform the abandoned stretch of Lexington Avenue, between Sheridan Avenue and Orange Street, to a public greenspace.

The project was brought to fruition by the Lexington Neighborhood Workgroup who formed this summer after seven abandoned buildings were deemed unsafe by the City of Albany and emergency demolition commenced. The workgroup’s vision is to provide a public greenspace in the one-block area that will transform this section of Lexington Avenue from an eyesore to a breath of fresh air where neighbors can gather to enjoy nature, relax and recreate.

Work on the greenspace will began today via volunteers and donations from neighborhood residents and local businesses. Additional improvements will be completed next spring in time for the spring growing season.
