Dress for Success Albany Clients Form the Traveling Women of Power to Inspire

Albany, NY – Keyalonda, at the age of 23, knows about abuse, growing up around drugs, and jail.  Although still young by most measures, she has experienced a turning point in her life and is optimistic that her story can help others.  Keyalonda tells her story through the Traveling Women of Power, a group of women from Dress for Success Albany Professional Women’s Group (PWG).

The PWG is a collection of women who were suited by Dress for Success Albany and are now successfully employed in the Capital Region.  The group focuses on professional development, networking opportunities, and supporting each other. In January Dress for Success Worldwide asked the PWG groups around the world to take on a community action project.  The Albany women passionately united around this unique idea with a cause. They decided to visit the places where people feel most vulnerable and provide the one thing they wish they had at their darkest moments – stories of success and hope.  The Traveling Women of Power was born.

Keyalonda looked professional in her brown dress and pearls.  After a long day of work she stood at the front of a room filled with guests of a local shelter and other PWG members.  Her story stumbled out a bit fast at times.  Her tragedies, all too common in this crowd, evoked emotion around the table.  When her story shifted to the last few months the mood noticeably changed.  She is working full-time in a legislative office.  Her evenings are filled with studying and attending college courses.  She is independent.  She has dreams.

Keyalonda gave the second story of the evening, but her message was consistent with the other Traveling Woman of Power stories shared: life is tough but if you believe in yourself you can rise up. When asked why she shared her story, Keyalonda smiled and said “There were key people placed in my life to help me get through my struggles.  Now I feel that it is necessary for me to share my story and inspire.”

The Traveling Women of Power left informational folders with each woman filled with contacts for local programs and services.  The folders may provide the connections to take the initial steps to independence, but the stories will stay with the women long after those papers are no longer needed.
